Stopping safely is non-negotiable. The good news: most brake problems give you warning signs long before they become dangerous — if you know what to listen for.
How Your Brakes Work
When you press the pedal, hydraulic fluid pushes pistons that squeeze brake pads against a metal disc, converting your car's motion into heat and bringing you to a stop.
Warning Signs
- Squealing or grinding when you brake
- Pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor
- Car pulls to one side when braking
- Vibration through the pedal or steering
- Brake or ABS warning light on
- Longer stopping distance than usual
What's Included in a Vehix Brake Inspection
- Pad thickness measurement
- Disc/rotor measurement for wear and warping
- Calliper operation check
- Hose and line inspection for cracks
- Brake fluid moisture and condition test
Brake Fluid Maintenance
Brake fluid absorbs water from the air. Over time this lowers its boiling point and corrodes internal components. We recommend a brake fluid flush every two years.
Brakes and Suspension Are Linked
Worn shocks let weight transfer too far forward when braking, lengthening stopping distance and overloading front pads. A brake inspection always includes a suspension check.
Vanderbijlpark Driving Conditions
Stop-start Vaal Triangle traffic, summer heat and dusty roads all accelerate brake wear. We see it every day in the workshop.
Brake Myths Debunked
- Myth: discs only need replacing when pads do — false, they're measured separately
- Myth: all brake fluids are the same — false, DOT spec matters
- Myth: squealing is harmless — false, it usually means pads are worn
When to Replace
Replace pads when they're below 3 mm. Replace discs when below the minimum thickness stamped on the disc itself, or when warped.
